BYOD at NCS?

BYOD
Bring your own device (BYOD) at Nelson Central School (NCS)? In my opinion I disagree. It would be fun, but I feel it would be unnecessary. For most kids, devices already consume a large sum of their time, we don’t want them to play an even larger role in their week. Some believe that BYOD would be beneficial for children’s learning, but I thoroughly disagree. I am sure that having one measly phone won’t raise your child’s IQ.

Firstly, there is a huge risk of devices breaking, getting lost and/or being stolen. I mean why would you put objects which can cost up to thousands of dollars in the hands of children. Most kids parents would not be in favour of giving their child a huge amount of money for replacing or repairing something which their child broke. If I was a parent, I for one certainly wouldn’t!

Now, onto my second point. Another reason I disagree with BYOD is that kids who can’t bring a device for any reason may feel uncool. Imagine if at lunchtime all your friends go off to play on their fancy, expensive phones and you were the only one without. Kids will start to believe that if you have a device you’re cool or nice or popular. Kids without one will feel like there is is a need to have a device, and any one without will feel upset and lonely.

Some teachers, parents and students believe that devices will be good to use as as rewards once they have finished their work. I feel that this will not work at all. Surely if you bribe kids with devices with devices for once they have finished work they will simply just rush their work and not write it to the best of their ability. Also I am certain it will not improve our learning. Lots of people say devices will help us with research. In our school each class has 3 ipads, about two or three ipads, there is a cupboard full of laptops and we also have a library full of computers! Surely this will be enough. Also, not everyone at a time would be needing devices to research, so we have more than enough without students bringing their own.

In conclusion I believe that having BYOD would not be beneficial for our school. There is a risk of devices being damaged, kids without a device will feel uncool and it would not help students education. There are so many more reasons which in my opinion undoubtedly concludes that we should not not have BYOD at NCS.

Ski trip 2016

On Tuesday the 16th of August, rooms 1, 2 and 15 went on a ski trip to rainbow ski field. All of the students got a wristband, it was either green, blue or red. Green meant you were only allowed on the beginner slope. Blue meant you could go on the intermediate and beginner slopes. If you had red it meant you could go on any. I started with a blue, but then I showed one of the instructors me going down the intermediate and then they gave me a red band. With my red band I went down the goat trail, I was really nervous but in the end it was super fun! Sadly, my mum accidently hurt her knee and had to stop skiing. Now she has crutches. Overall my ski trip was amazing! Check out some pictures below.

NCS enviroschool

This year Nelson Central School became an Enviroschool. In class we have been doing lots of work about how to sustain the earth. During ICT we made presentations on how to look after the environment. Check it out below, along with a rap about the environment.

Cecilia the wild thing!

Cecilia

Take one look at Cecilia and you might as well be staring at a six year old's toy. She certainly doesn't fit the title of a wild thing, that is until you meet her. A curly, thick, bright coat smothers her like a person in a snow suit. After you can peel your eyes away from her vibrant coat, you will realise she is basically a furry thirty centimetre football with green and orange zebra stripes. On top of all that she has a small mouth and nose, like a cat, and blue, bulging fish eyes sitting on top of her circular body. If you ever get close to her, beware if you do, the scent of togs with chlorine through them will tingle your nostrils.

Cecilia is a very popular, social wild thing and adores ferociously chasing ducks with Grayham, Symi and Strawberry. Every other minute of her day, when she isn't with her crazy friends, you'll find her upside down! You see, Cecilia is a world champ at headstands. Her record is nonstop for one hundred thousand hours. She does not just excel in headstands, but trampolining as well.Cecilia can effortlessly spin like a tornado in the air. She glides, swoops and prances through the sky on her trampoline. Any destination that she needs to reach she will roll there. If it's two metres or two miles she will roll. It's the only way to get around with a sphere for a body.

Cecilia is very hyperactive she is as energetic as someone who has eaten 20 kilos of lollies. Whenever she is on the phone her friends are aware to hold the phone at least a metre away from their ear, because she is so loud! In her mind she is the queen and everyone else are her slaves. She is not in the slightest humble and always boasts and lies about how "incredible" she is. You may be thinking she is cruel, but, surprisingly she is actually quite nice sometimes (or maybe thats so she has more to boast about). Never once has she called anyone a name. Cecilia once donated $1000 dollars to charity.

That is my wild thing!

Last Friday  room 5 went to Bridge Valley Adventure Camp. We went with room 7,9 and 16.There were lots of teams and activity's. My favourite activity was the water slide. We had a possum hunt at night there were lots of  fake possums all around and we need to find them. Each possum was one point for your team. You can also earn points by being the first team in line.We had a camp concert, me Sylvie, Ruby R and Amba performed Roar. I was really proud of the way I performed. Here is a quick slide show of camp!
